Building a simple Dashboard in Excel using Acumatica ERP OData

May 26, 2015 by Tim Rodman

Easy to Use and Massive Community

There is a reason that Microsoft Excel is the world’s most popular BI reporting tool. It’s easy to use and you can find tons how-to information online.

If you aren’t sure how to do something in Excel, just type your question into Google and the chances are that you will find an answer.

Excel formulas are very powerful and there are myriads of ways that you can combine them together to create powerful calculations.

Excel is already a prerequisite for anyone who wants to make it in business. It is used in every major business school and your company likely already has Excel people on the payroll.

Acumatica Dashboards in Excel

Dashboards are summarized reports that collect data into a central place and present it in a way that is visually appealing.

Excel is not the best dashboard tool out there, but you can still do a lot of creative things with it.

Think of your Excel spreadsheet as a blank canvas where you have the power to create whatever you want.

There are a lot of dashboard software products on the market, but the chances are that you will have to spend tens of thousands of dollars for the software. Then you have to spend money on consultants to build dashboards for you or train your staff to do it themselves.

With Excel, there is minimal training involved because the chances are very high that you already have someone on staff with Excel skills.

Where to start with Acumatica data in Excel?

The possibilities are endless once you get your data into Excel. But where do you start? What kind of things can you do?

Last week we connected our Acumatica data to Excel using an OData feed, but we didn’t really do much else with it.

This week we will do a few more things and build a very simply Excel dashboard.

We aren’t doing anything fancy here, but hopefully it gives you a brief idea of what is possible once you bring your Acumatica data into Excel.

There is A LOT more that we can do, and we will continue to build on this very simple example in the future.
