Questions Universal Search Customization

We are working on making inventory item lookup faster.  Currently we have built a Generic Query to search for inventory items by either the Manufacturer Part Number or the Vendor Number.  We have Stored this information in the Item Cross-Reference Table for each Item.  Our query works well but it adds a step to find items.  We would like to add this field as a search field in the Universal/Full-Text search bar and have it return the related stock item.  The reference that we want to add is the AlternateID from the Class INITEMXREF.

Any help would be appreciated.
