I am dealing with a prospect who is a Navision – AP 4.0 SP1 user and I am drawing up blanks on how to extract data from this old version of Nav, has anyone here had any experience with this?

Can you query the database with SQL?

Unfortunately not, the prospect is not using an SQL database, I have a couple of options the first is I found a couple of NAV resellers who are happy to assist, the assumption: there is SUPER access to all objects in Dynamics NAV 4.0.
The second option is the within the UI to extract data out by building inquiry screens and using the export to Excel function.
I did promote the idea of using a BI Tool to the partner and that option was not accepted and as I am not directly involved with the deal I have no influence in those conversations.
