The trial balance upload is balanced. I take it off hold and release it. the journal transactions screen which pops up automatically upon releasing the trial balance will not allow me to release it there. if i move to uploading the next trial balance, i can release the tb, but on the journal transactions page, though i can try to release it I get a cryptic error about "not able to release until there are unposted gl batches".

What does the Status on the Journal Transaction say? If it says Unposted, then you need to do another step to post it, or check the box in GL Preferences for it to automatically Post upon Release. Kind of annoying that it's a 2-step process.
I'm almost certain i have the gl preference checked off. The status of the journal transaction is unposted. This is the very first balance being uploaded does that have anything to do with it? It's driving me nuts.

It shouldn't have anything to do with being the first one that I can think of. Try posting it from the Post Transactions (GL502000) screen and see if it gives you an error.
