Is there a way to charge customers a freight rate dependant on the weight of the overall order?

For example, if the total sales order weighs under 100kg, the freight cost (invoiced to the customer) should be $10. But if the weight is over 100kg, the freight cost should be $20.

Can this be done? I thought that this could possibly be done via the Shipping Terms page (CS2080PL). This has the column Break Amount, which I think allows for freight cost charged to the customer to be dependant on the sales order dollar value. So would it be possible to add a customized column for the sales order weight here?

Or is there a better way to do this?

If you want to calculate a flat freight amount, it can be done with a combination of Shipping Zones, Ship Via Codes, and Shipping Terms.  First, create a shipping zone (or zones if you want to have different rates per zone).  Then define Ship Via Codes, and you can use the weight and rate columns on the Freight Rates tab of the Ship Via screen to define your $10 and $20 rates.  The Shipping Terms controls the amount that gets billed to the customer.  After configuring these items, enter a sales order and select the shipping zone, ship via code, and shipping terms on the order, and the freight should be added to the invoice when the order is processed.

The user guide has a very informative section on Freight Calculation - you can find it under Sales Orders->Configure Automatic Packaging->Freight Calculation

Myrcenary,

I like your idea. If I understand you correctly, I think you are suggesting to calculate the Freight Cost manually which can be done based on the Weight. Then pass that "cost" on to the Customer using Shipping Terms so the Freight Amount equals the Freight Cost.

The disadvantage of this of course is that you lose the ability to capture the actual Freight Cost on the Shipment because you are "hijacking" the Freight Cost calculation and using it to drive Freight Amount.

If you want to continue to capture the actual Freight Cost on the Shipment, I think you'd need a customization.

Tim, yes you are correct and I probably should have been more clear on the disadvantages.  As you mention, you lose the ability to track the actual cost of the shipment.  You also lose the integrated carrier function and would need to create the shipments manually in UPS or FedEx since those rely on the ship via.

If you want to utilize the integrated carrier function to generate the shipping label from Acumatica, but charge a flat amount based on weight, then a customization would be necessary.

Thanks Myrcenary and Tim for your ideas as to this, including the info as to using the Ship Via field. However I would like to keep the ability to capture the actual freight cost.

So I thought the easiest way to customise this would be to change the "Break Amount" column in the Shipping Terms page from focusing on the sales order amount to instead focus on the "Order Weight" field (Sales Order screen, Totals tab). Problem is, I dunno how to actually do this (or whether its a possibility). Would this just be a small code change?

I'm not sure how major it would be. Depends on where the change would need to be made in the code. You'd want to get a quote from an Acumatica developer.

@timrodman would you have any developer that you would recommend for this?

I've worked with SkyKnack before and had a good experience:
