Questions can a copy of Inventory item from item x to item Y along with its transaction is possible?

we have a unique situation where the item is blocked because of some program error. We have raised this already but this item is really a high traffic item. Creating a new item is not a solution for this as of now. 

As a result we are thinking of making the item obsolete provided it is possible to copy the item from one to another.

I am happy to add more detail if this is quite short.
