I am in the process of coming up with a naming convention for our subaccounts. We currently use only a one segment three-digit nomenclature for our subaccounts. Example Subaccount 000 is corporate, etc.
I am planning to add two or three more (three-digit) segments. I want to know if anyone has an established and proven way of a naming convention that gives them more of a dynamic way of producing reports when utilizing the subaccounts from their naming convention.
Examples I am throwing around are:
Segmented Subaccount could be ( xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx) which would translate to (order creator - customer/vendor - salesmen - item category)
I want to establish such a naming convention that the person creating the SO or PO is associated with the order (which would be a dynamic valve) but the rest of the segments could be fixed in the posting class.
I try to avoid Subaccounts whenever possible and instead get the data from the Subledger.
The idea is that your keep your P&L more summarized and clean, then use supported detailed reports that tie-out to the P&L. The advantage is that you can slice and dice on whatever you want in the detailed report rather than being limited to what is baked into the General Ledger.
