I am unable to change a stock item's serial class. This is the error I get:
Lot/serial class cannot be changed when its tracking method is not compatible with the previous class and the item is in use.
It seems to mean I cannot change an item's lot/serial class if they have different tracking methods. Is the only solution to recreate the stock item?

Regarding this error there are a couple of customizations that users can try to fix this issue occurring even after clearing out the inventory and open transactional documents:
This didn't work for me though even then and I had to open a case with Acumatica.
You might be able to change it if there is no Quantity On Hand. It's still cumbersome to flush the inventory and bring it back in, but at least you'd be able to keep the item history.
