I've found Report Designer to be deficient as an enterprise reporting solution for BI developers and report authors. What other tools are available as alternatives? Tableau? Microsoft SSRS? Cognos? Infomation Builders? Are there limiting factors to consider in this evaluation. How can DACs be leveraged in conjunction with these third party tools? What should I be focusing on during my evaluations?
Hi egates17,
Report Designer is definitely not a BI application. It's more of a forms designer.
Two products that I would recommend looking at:
- Power BI - The Generic Inquiries in Acumatica can be exposed as data sources in the OData format and piped directly into Power BI.
- Excel - You can do the same thing with OData piped into Excel and used the full Power BI ETL and modeling functionality that is available out-of-the-box in Excel 2016. And it's free.
- Solver BI360 - A 3rd party product that is Acumatica's strongest Business Intelligence partner in my opinion.
Tim - do you think that Solver BI360 is something that we could use here. we are still looking to to make and build trending reports. we are having no luck with the pivot tables in the new version of Acumatica. We are having no luck with the Power BI the system will not allow us to connect to Acumatica.
We really need to find a way that i can build reports. GI are great to find out things like right now in the moment but, they are not good with finding out some trends. Like how do we know when an item drops in sales. How can we can see our sales reps produce sales from the month before or year before.
We have made items classes how can we see the sales or number of units sold. this is all included in the 13 month reports that we are looking to get done. We are told that we can tie GI reports together but, that all takes a ton of time to build. We can see how the pivot table would work out best but we are not able to get it add correctly.
I'm not sure what the current BI360 live connector for Acumatica looks like and what modules it covers. BI360 normally pushes you towards working with their Data Warehouse which you can populate with Generic Inquiry data. The Data Warehouse data has to be scheduled for refresh so it isn't "live", but the advantage is that data is structured in a way that is friendlier for reporting.
I should say though that you would still have to build the Generic Inquiries. And once you do that, putting Pivot Tables on top might do the trick for you guys. I think you just might need some training.
